DROWNING IN PLASTIC

Campaign

Plastic. A symbol of affordability, resilience, & easy accessibility. It’s a shapeshifting material that seems to always sneak into our lives. Impossible to get away from. It’s practically the face of our consumer culture.

But did you know it can take up to 1,000 years for plastic products to decompose? That means since its creation in 1907, every single piece of plastic created still exists today. And it’s growing exponentially, with 5.25 trillion macro & micro pieces in our ocean already. If we continue or even increase the use & waste of plastic, it won’t take long until we drown in plastic.

🐟 Plastic will outnumber fish by 2050.
♻️ 91% of all plastic ever created has not been recycled.
🐠 1 in 3 fish caught for consumption contains plastic.
🛍 Plastic packaging is the biggest culprit, resulting in 80 million tons of waste yearly from the US alone.
🗑 More than 1 million plastic bags end up in the trash every minute.

What steps have you taken to try & cut down your plastic consumption? Making little switches can be simple, while having a massive impact. Here are some idea to help get started, or at the very least, make you aware of your personal footprint.

♻️ Drink tap water instead of buying water bottles. If you’re concerned about your local tap water, get a filter for your faucet.

♻️ Bring your own grocery bags to eliminate the 500 billion plastic bags that go to waste per year after roughly 15 minutes of use.

♻️ Cook at home. It’s healthier for you & the environment by taking out to go bags, plastic wrap, & straws out of the equation.

♻️ Know what & what not to recycle. Plastic bags, clothing, food & liquid, electrical cords, Styrofoam, needles & yard waste do not belong in recycling.
